Our
Rhode Island Red Chickens
The
Rhode Island Red Chicken is regarded as the best, most dependable, and most
profitable layer of high quality brown eggs. As the name suggests, the breed
was developed in the state of Rhode Island in the early 20th century.
Most “backyard farmers” start their flock with a mixture of these great brown
egg layers, with the best over-all white egg layer, the White Leg Horn, also
known as the Pearl White Leghorn.
The
hens start to lay at about 5 months, and will start producing small to medium
sized eggs, followed by nice large and extra large eggs. Our fresh eggs have
large orange-yellow yolks than sit high over the whites when cracked, which
demonstrates a high protein content.
We
feed a nice layer-mix feed to our chickens made from corn and soy beans. We do
not use hormones or antibiotics on our chickens and only add wormer to their
water as needed. Our chickens our housed in our barn, but three seasons of the
year, in temperate weather, they are allowed to free range our farm eating
grass, seeds, and insects.
We’ve
owned and raised many other large or heavy breed chickens in the past but for
great medium to dark brown eggs, the Rhode Island Red is our favorite.
