Our Sicilian Buttercup Chickens
The Sicilian Buttercup Chicken is a
member of the Mediterranean Class of Poultry originating from the island of
Sicily off the southern most tip of Italy. It was introduced to the United States
just over 100 years ago, and we became interested in this breed based upon its
appearance. It is a medium sized bird, and the cockerel and hen have different,
but equally attractive, plumage and adornments. The hens have a diminutive comb that barely rises a quarter inch
down the center of their head. Their feather patterns are reminiscent of a
Medieval tapestry. The cockerels are dressed in feathers, painted in a vibrant
pallet of oranges and reds and black.
Beyond their plumage, the cockerels also possess a truly unique comb,
which resembles a crown.
They are community minded chickens and
for no other reason than their royal appearance, we keep them as part of our
flock.
